Low-dimensional dynamical system model for observed coherent structures in ocean satellite data

چکیده
The dynamics of coherent structures present in real-world environmental data is analyzed. The method developed in this Paper combines the power of the Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) technique to identify these coherent structures in experimental data sets, and its optimality in providing Galerkin basis for projecting and reducing complex dynamical models. The POD basis used is the one obtained from the experimental data. We apply the procedure to analyze coherent structures in an oceanic setting, the ones arising from instabilities of the Algerian current, in the western Mediterranean Sea. Data are from satellite altimetry providing Sea Surface Height, and the model is a two-layer quasigeostrophic system. A four-dimensional dynamical system is obtained that correctly describe the observed coherent structures (moving eddies). Finally, a bifurcation analysis is performed on the reduced model. email: [email protected] email: [email protected]

Distribution Modeling of Bigeye Tuna (Thunnus obesus Lowe, 1839), Using Satellite Derived Environmental Variables in Indian Ocean
Understanding effects of environment on the distribution of economic fish is a fundamental step in the ecosystem-based management and ultimately a standard approach in management policies. Bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) is one of the most important aquatic species harvested in the Indian Ocean. The present study investigated the association of different variables effecting the rate of catch and d...
متن کاملModified Structure Function Model Based on Coherent Structures
In the present study, a modified Structure Function was introduced. In this modified Structure Function model, the coefficient of model was computed dynamically base on the coherent structure in the flow field. The ability of this Modified Structure Function was investigated for complex flow over a square cylinder in free stream and a low aspect ratio cylinder confined in a channel. The Results...
متن کاملDissipative inertial transport patterns near coherent Lagrangian eddies in the ocean.
Recent developments in dynamical systems theory have revealed long-lived and coherent Lagrangian (i.e., material) eddies in incompressible, satellite-derived surface ocean velocity fields. Paradoxically, observed drifting buoys and floating matter tend to create dissipative-looking patterns near oceanic eddies, which appear to be inconsistent with the conservative fluid particle patterns create...
متن کاملA transfer operator based numerical investigation of coherent structures in three-dimensional Southern ocean circulation
We report on a numerical investigation of three-dimensional circulation in the Southern Ocean over a domain extending from Antarctica to -36 degrees latitude and from the sea surface to a depth of 500 metres. The high latitude Southern Ocean is a region low in measurements but important for climatic and biological applications. Our investigation is based upon velocity data simulated by a state-...
متن کاملDynamical System Analysis and Forecasting of Deformation Produced by an Earthquake Fault
We present a method of constructing low-dimensional nonlinear models describing the main dynamical features of a discrete 2-D cellular fault zone, with many degrees of freedom, embedded in a 3-D elastic solid. A given fault system is characterized by a set of parameters that describe the dynamics, rheology, property disorder, and fault geometry. Depending on the location in the system parameter...
